Get your free estimateBFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Yonkers Owner’s Guide
We stock and install BFT-compatible gate motor replacements across Yonkers, with most BFT swing and slide gate motor replacements running between $850 and $1,900 installed, depending on the model and whether we’re swapping the motor only or the full operator assembly. Same-day replacement is usually possible within Yonkers when we have your model matched on the truck, and we’ll always confirm the exact price before any work starts. Most owners discover the failure the hard way: the gate hums but won’t move, opens halfway and reverses, or the opener trips the breaker overnight and you find a dead panel in the morning.
We’re Calder Gate Repair Yonkers, an independent gate repair company and part of the Relay Home Co. family since 2009. We’re not affiliated with BFT, but we’re factory-familiar with their hardware and we carry the parts that fail most often. If you’re reading this with a dead BFT motor, the fix is more straightforward than you think, and we’ll explain every step before you commit to anything.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT makes two main families of residential gate openers in the U.S. market: the Deimos series (hydraulic swing operators for heavier gates) and the Phobos series (electromechanical swing and slide operators for residential gates). We also see the older Icaro and Icaro Ultra controls still running on Yonkers properties near Untermeyer Park and up in the Greystone neighborhood. If your opener has a BFT badge and the motor is dead, the replacement path depends on which family you have.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: BFT Deimos operators use a 24V motor integrated into a hydraulic pump assembly, so you almost never replace just an electric motor. You replace the hydraulic unit or the pump motor as a matched set. The Phobos line is easier: the motor is electromechanical and can be swapped independently. Before ordering anything, check the label on the control board inside the operator housing. It’ll show the model family (Deimos, Phobos, Icaro) and the voltage. If the label is faded or gone, send us a photo of the opener housing and we’ll identify it. We do this over the phone for free because it saves you from buying a part that won’t bolt in.
On OEM versus aftermarket: BFT OEM motors cost more but carry the manufacturer’s exact spec and bolt pattern. Quality aftermarket motors (we use ones with matching torque curves and sealed bearings) can run 20 – 30% less and work fine for most residential gates under 14 feet. We’ll give you both prices in writing and let you choose. For side-hinged gates, the aftermarket option is usually fine. For a 400-lb sliding gate on a slope, we recommend sticking with OEM because the duty cycle matters more.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- The gate strains and moves slower than it used to. Most BFT motors are gear-driven or hydraulic, and when the motor loses torque, it struggles against the gate’s weight before it finally stalls out. This is the earliest warning sign and the cheapest time to swap it.
- The opener trips the breaker or blows a fuse on startup. This usually means the motor winding is shorting internally. It may still move the gate for a few seconds before the circuit cuts out. Don’t keep resetting the breaker; the motor is done and it’s heating the wiring.
- The gate opens partially then reverses or stops dead. On BFT operators, the control board monitors motor current. A failing motor draws more amps than the board expects, so the board shuts the gate down mid-cycle. The motor might still be “working” but it’s on its way out.
- The motor hums but the gate doesn’t move at all. On the Phobos line, this typically means the capacitor has failed or the gear train is binding. On Deimos hydraulic units, it means the pump motor is running but the hydraulic bypass valve isn’t building pressure. Both require a motor-level fix, not just a sensor adjustment.
- The opener was installed before 2012 and has never had motor service. In Yonkers, winters are hard on gate motors. Contraction and expansion from freeze-thaw cycles wear the bearings faster than the manufacturer’s spec suggests. Most BFT motors in our area last 8 – 12 years with regular use, and if yours is older than that, a failure is predictable.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a residential BFT gate motor replacement in Yonkers, here’s what we quote in writing before work starts:
- Phobos electromechanical motor swap: $450 – $900 installed, depending on the gate weight and whether we need to upgrade the capacitor or limit switch harness at the same time.
- Deimos hydraulic motor or pump unit replacement: $900 – $1,900 installed, because the hydraulic assembly is a more involved job and the fluid needs to be drained, refilled, and bled properly.
- Control board replacement (if the motor failure damaged the board): $180 – $400 extra, and the board is often what fails first on BFT units that have been through a few power surges. We’ll test the board before quoting it.
Every one of these quotes includes the part, the labor, travel within Yonkers, and the setup and calibration of the gate’s travel limits and force settings. The price is the price: we hand you a written estimate, we agree on it, and the invoice matches. No surprise line items.
Every BFT motor replacement we install is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails within 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing on every job, along with a written price before any work starts.

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check the power supply, the breaker, and whether the release mechanism is engaged. If the operator has a manual key release, disengaging it frees the gate so you’re not locked out. You can also check whether the gate itself moves freely by hand. That tells you if the problem is the motor or the gate hardware.
What you shouldn’t do is open the operator housing and start testing a BFT motor with the power live. These motors run on 24V control circuits but they’re fed by 120V or 240V line voltage, and the capacitor inside the operator can hold a charge even after the breaker is off. A trained technician with the right meter and the right wiring reference makes this a 90-minute job. A homeowner guessing at it makes it a hospital visit. We’d rather you not gamble on that.
If you’re not sure whether it’s the motor or the board, call us. Nico Alvarez and the crew diagnose BFT openers over the phone in under five minutes, and we’ll tell you straight up whether it’s worth a service call. The call costs nothing. Tell me what the gate is doing wrong – I’ll tell you exactly what it needs and what it costs. No runaround.
FAQs
Most BFT gate motors in Yonkers last between 8 and 12 years with normal residential use, but freeze-thaw cycles and power surges from Hudson Valley storms can shorten that. If your motor is older than a decade and showing strain, replacement is cheaper than waiting for a full failure at 10 p.m.
Call (585) 496-2148 and we’ll help you figure out whether your motor has life left or you’re on borrowed time.
Sometimes. If the capacitor failed or a gear stripped, those are repairable. If the motor winding is shorted or the bearing is seized, replacement is the honest answer. We always quote the repair first if it makes sense, because a $60 capacitor is better than a $600 motor. But we won’t patch a motor that’s going to fail again in three months just to save you money today.
Call (585) 496-2148 and we’ll tell you which camp your opener falls into.
A straight motor swap on a Phobos opener takes about 90 minutes from arrival to testing, including resetting the travel limits and force settings. A Deimos hydraulic replacement runs 2 to 3 hours because of the fluid work and bleeding procedure. We’ll give you a firm time estimate before we start, and if anything changes, we tell you on the spot. You’ll get a live, trackable arrival time, not a four-hour window.
Call (585) 496-2148 to schedule your replacement.
We stock the most common BFT Phobos motors and capacitors on our trucks for same-day service in Yonkers, plus Deimos hydraulic pump units at our local supply. If your opener is an older Icaro or an unusual configuration, we can usually source the OEM part within one to two business days and schedule around that. We’ll tell you before you commit.
Call (585) 496-2148 with your model number and we’ll check stock while you’re on the phone.
